Many of my clients ask, “Should I follow a special diet?” The truth is, you don’t need to overcomplicate it. I’ll walk you through what I recommend... simple, high-protein meals that actually help the medication work better.

]]>
Hi, I’m Courtney D’Angelo, a registered dietitian, and this is a question I get all the time from my clients: “What should I be eating now that I’m on a GLP-1?”

If that’s you, you’re not alone. Many women I work with start a compounded GLP-1 program and then suddenly lose their appetite, feel weird around food, or aren’t sure how to eat in a way that supports their goals.

Let’s break this down together.

No rules, no restrictions.

Just a smart, realistic way to nourish your body while letting the medication do its job.

There’s No Such Thing as a “GLP-1 Diet”

First, let’s clear this up: you don’t need to follow a special meal plan because you’re taking a GLP-1.

These medications don’t come with a built-in diet. But that doesn’t mean food doesn’t matter—in fact, what you eat can make a huge difference in how you feel and how your body responds.

We’re not aiming for perfection. We’re aiming for progress.

What To Eat While Taking a GLP-1

My #1 Focus: Protein (Especially Now)

If you only remember one thing from this article, let it be this: protein matters more now than ever.

Compounded GLP-1s reduce your appetite, and when you’re eating less overall, you need to make sure what you do eat supports your metabolism, energy, and strength. That’s where protein comes in.

Here’s a simple goal: Aim for 25–30g of protein at each meal.

Need ideas?

 • Breakfast: eggs with Greek yogurt and berries
 • Lunch: grilled chicken over greens with quinoa and a vinaigrette
 • Dinner: turkey burger with roasted sweet potatoes and broccoli
 • Snack: protein shake, cottage cheese with fruit, or tuna and crackers

Even small protein boosts throughout the day can add up!

Eat on a Rhythm—Not Just When You're Hungry

This one trips people up: GLP-1s blunt your appetite, so you might go hours without feeling hungry. But just because you can skip meals doesn’t mean you should.

Your body still needs nutrients, especially protein and fiber, to function well and preserve lean muscle.

Try setting some gentle eating anchors during the day:

 • A balanced breakfast or protein shake in the morning
 • A nourishing lunch with protein and veggies
 • A light dinner with fiber and healthy fats

Think of it as fueling your body, not just responding to hunger.

Struggling With Nausea or Low Appetite?

You’re not alone there. Some of my clients tell me they want to eat well, but the nausea (especially early on) makes it tough.

Here are some gentle food ideas that won’t feel overwhelming:

 • Smoothies with protein powder, banana, and almond milk
 • Clear protein drinks (like the ones from Clean Simple Eats)
 • Bone broth with soft veggies and shredded chicken
 • Mashed sweet potato with cottage cheese

The goal isn’t to eat a full plate every time. Small, nutrient-dense bites count too.

Let’s Talk About the Mental Side

I’ve had women tell me they feel better—fewer cravings, more balanced energy—but they’re frustrated because the scale isn’t moving.

Here’s what I tell them:

If your habits are improving, that’s progress. If you’re building strength, that’s progress. If you’re more consistent with meals and movement, that’s huge progress.

Sometimes, fat loss and muscle gain cancel each other out on the scale—but your body composition is changing, and that matters more.

What to Keep In Mind (and What to Let Go Of)

Keep:

 • Protein with every meal
 • Fiber from fruits, veggies, and whole grains
 • Hydration (yes, water still matters!)

Let go of:

 • Guilt for not eating “enough”
 • Fear of eating “too much”
 • Trying to follow a rigid plan

Your body is adjusting. Give yourself space to figure it out.

Take This Home

There’s no one-size-fits-all plan when it comes to GLP-1s and eating. But I hope this helped you feel a little more grounded.

Nourish your body with simple, high-protein meals. Be kind to yourself when things feel confusing. And remember—you don’t have to do this alone.

If you want help with high-protein, macro-friendly recipes, and strength training to build your muscle, check out the Simply Strong App. It’s what I personally use and recommend to all my clients.

Javy Coffee Review: Is This Coffee Concentrate Worth It? https://dtcwellnesshub.com/considering-javy-coffee-my-review/ https://dtcwellnesshub.com/considering-javy-coffee-my-review/#respond Wed, 05 Feb 2025 19:03:00 +0000 https://dtcwellnesshub.com/?p=17076 Javy Coffee is a fast, no-brew coffee concentrate that’s making waves online. We tested its taste, cost, and convenience—here’s what you need to know before buying.

The post Javy Coffee Review: Is This Coffee Concentrate Worth It? appeared first on DTC Wellness Hub.

]]>
Javy Coffee has been all over social media lately, with influencers raving about how it saves time and money while still delivering a strong, flavorful coffee experience. Naturally, I was curious—could this tiny bottle of coffee concentrate actually replace my morning cold brew?

I gave Javy’s Original Unsweetened and Mocha flavors a try to see if they live up to the hype. Below, I’ll break down how Javy tastes, how it compares to traditional coffee, and whether it’s worth your money—especially if you’re looking for a quick and easy caffeine fix.

What is Javy Coffee?

Javy is a coffee concentrate that lets you make instant coffee without brewing. Instead of grinding beans or steeping grounds overnight for cold brew, you simply add one tablespoon of Javy to water or milk, and your coffee is ready to go.

Javy’s Key Selling Points:

✅ Convenience – No coffee machine, no brewing time
✅ Versatility – Can be used hot, iced, or in recipes
✅ Affordability – Costs less per cup than Starbucks cold brew
✅ Eco-Friendly – Less waste compared to traditional coffee pods

It all sounds great, but does Javy actually taste good?

Taste Test: How Does Javy Coffee Taste?

I tried both the Original Unsweetened and Mocha flavors, testing them in different ways—iced coffee, blended with milk, and even mixed into a protein shake.

my two javy coffee concentrates

Original Unsweetened:

✔ Strong, bold flavor
✔ Tastes more like instant coffee than cold brew
✔ Slightly bitter if not mixed correctly

Mocha Flavor:

✔ Hints of chocolate
✖ Has an artificial aftertaste
✖ More bitter than expected

💡 Pro Tip: If you like smooth, mellow cold brew, Javy might be too intense unless you dilute it with extra milk or creamer.

How It Compares to Other Coffee Options:

Coffee TypeTasteConveniencePrice per Serving
Javy CoffeeBold, slightly bitterVery easy~$1.00
Store-Bought Cold BrewSmooth, mellowEasy~$1.50-$2.00
Instant CoffeeOften bitter, weakSuper easy~$0.50
Fresh Brewed CoffeeRich, customizableRequires time~$0.75

👉 Final Verdict on Taste: Javy is stronger and more bitter than cold brew but smoother than instant coffee. If you like bold espresso flavors, you’ll probably enjoy it.

Cost & Value: Is Javy Worth It?

Javy costs about $25 per bottle, which contains 30 servings (1 tablespoon per cup). If you like extra strong coffee, you might need 2 tablespoons per cup, meaning a bottle may only last 15-20 servings.

For comparison:

 • A bottle of store-bought cold brew (like Stok or Starbucks) costs $6-$10 for 6-8 servings.
 • A venti iced coffee at Starbucks costs $3-$5 per drink.
 • A bag of coffee beans for home brewing costs $10-$15 and lasts weeks.

💰 Does it save money?

✔ If you’re replacing daily Starbucks runs, YES.
✔ If you’re replacing store-bought cold brew, MAYBE.
✖ If you drink lots of coffee, regular beans are still cheaper.

Convenience Factor: Is Javy Easy to Use?

Javy is extremely convenient, especially if you:

✅ Don’t own a coffee maker
✅ Are always on the go
✅ Want quick iced coffee
✅ Like adding coffee to protein shakes or recipes

Mixing is simple: one tablespoon of Javy + water or milk, stir, and done.

Potential Issues & Customer Complaints

Before buying Javy, I checked Reddit and Trustpilot reviews. Here’s what I found:

1⃣ Subscription Model Issues
⚠ Some customers accidentally signed up for a monthly subscription when ordering from Javy’s website. Be careful when checking out!

2⃣ Customer Service Complaints
⚠ A few users reported slow or unhelpful support when trying to cancel orders.

3⃣ Taste Inconsistencies
⚠ Some people love Javy, while others find it too bitter—especially the flavored versions like Mocha and Caramel.

Final Verdict: Would I Recommend Javy Coffee?

✅ Who It’s Best For:

 • Busy people who want quick coffee without brewing
 • Cold brew lovers looking for an easy alternative
 • People trying to cut back on Starbucks spending
 • Anyone who likes strong, bold coffee flavors

❌ Who Might Not Like It:

 • If you prefer smooth, mild coffee, Javy might be too strong or bitter.
 • If you don’t like subscriptions, order from Amazon to avoid auto-renewals.

Final Rating: 7/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

✔ Convenient and easy to use
✔ Stronger than instant coffee but not as smooth as cold brew
✔ Great for travel and quick caffeine fixes
✖ Can be bitter if not mixed correctly
✖ Subscription model can be confusing

Would I buy Javy again? Maybe. It’s convenient, but I prefer the smoothness of traditional cold brew.

Five days to kickstart your weight loss journey in menopause – through the proper diet. I challenge you to stick to the diet plan – it's just 5 days! But, the way all of our menopause women win the challenge is to take it one day at a time. Focus on winning today, follow the plan, and you'll be on the path to healthy, sustainable weight loss.

5 Days To Kickstart Your Weight Loss Journey Through Healthy Eating

Day 1: Setting the Foundation

Starting your first day on the right foot is key, especially when it comes to nutrition during menopause. You don’t have to make drastic changes overnight. The goal for Day 1 is to ease into healthy habits while focusing on balanced meals that provide energy, stabilize blood sugar, and support weight loss.

Breakfast: Protein-Packed Start

Breakfast is a crucial part of the day, which helps regulate your metabolism and keeps you full until your next meal. Start your day with a balanced meal that includes protein, healthy fats, and some carbs for energy.

 • Example Meal: Scrambled eggs with spinach and avocado. Add a small portion of whole-grain toast or a serving of fruit if you want to keep your energy up through the morning.
 • Why It Works: Protein keeps you full, and healthy fats like avocado help with hormone regulation. Spinach is rich in magnesium, which can help with muscle function and sleep, key considerations during menopause.

Lunch: Light & Nourishing

Lunch should be filling but not heavy. Focus on lean protein, fiber, and veggies to keep your energy steady throughout the afternoon.

 • Example Meal: Grilled chicken or tofu with a mixed greens salad (spinach, arugula, kale), cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and a homemade olive oil dressing.
 • Why It Works: Protein from chicken or tofu fuels your muscles, and veggies provide fiber, which aids digestion and keeps you feeling satisfied longer. Olive oil supports healthy fats and gives you the energy you need for the rest of the day.

Dinner: A Balanced Meal

For dinner, aim for a meal that includes protein, vegetables, and a healthy carb. Keep it light, but make sure it’s filling enough to avoid snacking after dinner.

 • Example Meal: Baked salmon with a side of roasted sweet potatoes and steamed broccoli.
 • Why It Works: Salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce inflammation and support brain health. Sweet potatoes provide complex carbs that give you sustained energy, and broccoli is high in fiber and vitamin C.

Day 2: Focus on Fiber and Hydration

Day 2 is about supporting your digestion and keeping your body hydrated. Many women in menopause experience digestive issues, so it's important to include fiber-rich foods that support healthy digestion while making sure you stay hydrated. Also, when you’re hydrated, your body can process nutrients more efficiently, helping with weight loss.

Breakfast: Fiber-Rich and Filling

Start the day with a meal that supports your digestive system. Fiber helps keep you full, supports your gut, and ensures you’re not sluggish.

 • Example Meal: Greek yogurt with chia seeds, berries, and a sprinkle of flaxseed. Add a few almonds for crunch.
 • Why It Works: Greek yogurt provides protein and probiotics, which support gut health. Chia seeds and flaxseeds are great sources of fiber and omega-3s. Berries add antioxidants and fiber, which help with digestion and inflammation.

Lunch: Balanced and Satisfying

For lunch, incorporate more veggies and lean protein to keep you satisfied without feeling heavy. If you’re feeling a bit bloated, this meal should help balance things out.

 • Example Meal: A quinoa salad with roasted vegetables (like zucchini, bell peppers, and eggplant), chickpeas, and a lemon-tahini dressing.
 • Why It Works: Quinoa is a complete protein, giving you the energy you need. Chickpeas provide fiber and are great for digestion. Roasted veggies are packed with vitamins and antioxidants to help reduce inflammation.

Dinner: Keep It Light and Nourishing

For dinner, keep it light but nourishing. Focus on protein and vegetables while staying mindful of your portion sizes.

 • Example Meal: Grilled shrimp with a side of steamed asparagus and a small baked potato (with a little olive oil and herbs).
 • Why It Works: Shrimp is a lean source of protein that’s easy to digest. Asparagus is a great detoxifier and contains fiber to keep you feeling satisfied. The small potato provides fiber and helps stabilize blood sugar.

Day 3: Balance Hormones and Boost Energy

On Day 3, we’re going to focus on foods that support hormonal balance and boost your energy levels. Menopause can cause fluctuations in hormones like estrogen and progesterone, which can affect energy and mood. By eating nutrient-dense foods, you can help keep your hormones in check and feel more energized throughout the day.

Breakfast: Energizing and Protein-Packed

For breakfast, we’ll keep things simple but effective, with plenty of protein to start the day right.

 • Example Meal: Scrambled eggs with spinach, avocado, and a side of whole-grain toast.
 • Why It Works: Eggs provide high-quality protein to keep you feeling full and satisfied. Spinach is rich in magnesium, which helps regulate hormones and promotes better sleep. Avocado adds healthy fats, which are essential for hormone production. Whole-grain toast provides complex carbs to keep your energy stable.

Lunch: Hormonal Balance with Healthy Fats

Lunch is all about adding healthy fats to your diet to keep your hormones balanced and energy high. Healthy fats help regulate hormones and keep blood sugar stable.

 • Example Meal: Grilled chicken salad with mixed greens, avocado, walnuts, and olive oil-based dressing.
 • Why It Works: The chicken provides lean protein to help repair tissues and maintain muscle. The walnuts add omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for hormonal balance. Mixed greens like kale and arugula are packed with vitamins and minerals, while the olive oil dressing supports healthy fat intake.

Dinner: Light Yet Satisfying

For dinner, we’ll focus on a lean protein and a mix of colorful vegetables to help reduce inflammation and promote healthy digestion.

 • Example Meal: Baked salmon with roasted sweet potatoes and steamed broccoli.
 • Why It Works: Salmon is rich in omega-3s, which help reduce inflammation and support heart health. Sweet potatoes provide fiber and antioxidants, while broccoli is a cruciferous vegetable that supports liver health and helps balance estrogen levels. This meal is light but filling and will leave you feeling satisfied without being overly heavy.

Day 4: Support Metabolism and Fight Fatigue

On Day 4, we’ll focus on boosting metabolism and reducing fatigue, two common challenges during menopause. Eating foods that support your metabolism and help maintain steady energy levels throughout the day can make a huge difference in how you feel.

Breakfast: Fiber-Rich and Energizing

A great breakfast helps fuel your day and keeps your metabolism active. Today, we’ll include fiber to support digestion and stabilize blood sugar levels.

 • Example Meal: Greek yogurt with chia seeds, flaxseeds, and berries.
 • Why It Works: Greek yogurt is high in protein to help you feel full and support muscle maintenance. Chia seeds and flaxseeds are packed with fiber and omega-3s, which help regulate hormones and metabolism. Berries add antioxidants and a touch of sweetness without spiking blood sugar levels.

Lunch: Metabolism-Boosting Protein and Veggies

For lunch, we’re going to focus on lean protein and plenty of vegetables that help increase energy and support your metabolism.

 • Example Meal: Turkey lettuce wraps with cucumber, bell peppers, and a sprinkle of olive oil and lemon juice.
 • Why It Works: Turkey is rich in lean protein, which helps with muscle maintenance and metabolism. The crunchy veggies are low in calories but high in fiber, which promotes digestion and helps control hunger. Olive oil and lemon juice offer healthy fats that support hormone regulation.

Dinner: Nourishing, Low-Carb Meal

Dinner should be light but satisfying, and this meal will give you the perfect balance of protein and healthy fats to keep you feeling great and energized.

 • Example Meal: Grilled shrimp with a side of roasted asparagus and cauliflower rice.
 • Why It Works: Shrimp is a lean source of protein and very low in calories, making it a great choice for weight management. Asparagus is high in antioxidants and fiber, which helps with digestion and energy levels. Cauliflower rice is a low-carb alternative that adds volume and nutrients without the extra calories.

Day 5: Refuel and Recharge

On Day 5, it's time to recharge your body and support the long-term benefits of this plan. Today, we’ll focus on refueling with nutrient-dense foods that promote balanced energy, reduce inflammation, and help you feel your best as you finish the week strong.

Breakfast: A Balanced Start with Healthy Fats

To kick off Day 5, we’re going to focus on a breakfast that supports sustained energy levels throughout the day.

 • Example Meal: Avocado toast with a poached egg and a sprinkle of hemp seeds on whole-grain bread.
 • Why It Works: The healthy fats in avocado and eggs help nourish your body, while fiber from the whole grain bread keeps you full longer. Hemp seeds add additional omega-3 fatty acids and protein to support muscle health and reduce inflammation.

Lunch: Lean Protein with Nutrient-Packed Greens

For lunch, it’s important to focus on lean protein and plenty of leafy greens to continue fueling your metabolism and balancing your hormones.

 • Example Meal: Grilled chicken salad with spinach, mixed greens, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and olive oil-based dressing.
 • Why It Works: Grilled chicken provides lean protein, which helps with muscle repair and energy. Spinach and mixed greens are high in antioxidants and fiber, which aid digestion and support your overall wellness. Olive oil adds healthy fats that help with hormone regulation.

Dinner: Light but Satisfying Dinner

Dinner on Day 5 will be light but still packed with nutrients that help you feel nourished and satisfied.

 • Example Meal: Baked salmon with roasted Brussels sprouts and sweet potato wedges.
 • Why It Works: Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce inflammation and promote heart health. Brussels sprouts are high in fiber and support digestion. Sweet potatoes provide slow-digesting carbs that help maintain blood sugar levels and provide long-lasting energy.

Overnight oats are delicious, packed with protein and provide a fast option for breakfast or snacks. I had been making my own version until I came across HOLOS Overnight Oats. The process of having breakfast ready first thing when I wake up just got even easier.

Key Facts

 • There are 20 grams of plant-based protein in each serving of HOLOS.

 • Thirteen vitamins and minerals are included in a HOLOS serving.

 • Rich in fiber

 • 1 billion CFUs of probiotics are included.

 • Gluten-free

 • Made using organic ingredients.

Choose HOLOS Overnight Oats If…

 • You want a protein-packed breakfast or snack that’s super easy to make.

 • You’re looking to regulate and support your digestive health with added fiber and probiotics.

My Experience and Review of HOLOS Overnight Oats

assortment flavors holos overnight oats

Like I mentioned, I’ve eaten overnight oats before. I’ve made my own, and I’ve purchased different products. I think this is such a great option for breakfast or even later in the day. It fills you up, provides you with great nutritional support and the fiber helps promote good gut health. When I came across HOLOS Overnight Oats, I knew that I had to try them. Its protein content alone had me sold.

I ordered a variety of HOLOS to try out. All of the flavors were intriguing, including:

 • Vanilla
 • Berries
 • Banana and Cranberries
 • Cocoa
 • Maple and Almonds
 • Caramel and Raisins
 • Chai
 • Apple and Cinnamon

I have my favorites, but there really wasn’t any variety that I didn’t like at all.

Because of the gut health aspect of this product (added fiber and probiotics), I was interested to see how HOLOS would impact me. I noticed that I experienced a bit of bloating and gas for the first week or so after starting it. I was eating it daily, so maybe it would be smart to skip a day or two when you’re first trying HOLOS.

I definitely noticed a difference now that I was eating a lot more protein. Protein is one of those things that I don’t necessarily notice that I’m lacking in my diet, but I see a big difference in how I feel once I start increasing my intake. HOLOS Muesli made me feel more energized throughout the day; my workout intensity increased, and I experienced fewer gut issues once I adjusted to the fiber and probiotics.

Does It Taste Good?

There’s no doubt that HOLOS Overnight Oats taste great. Each of the flavors is unique. There are no artificial ingredients or flavors added, so it’s very natural-tasting. I love that there is less than 10 grams of sugar in each serving for the majority of the flavors.

What Is My Favorite Flavor?

I personally love the HOLOS berry flavor. You can really taste all of the sweet and tart berries that are inside, including black mulberries, blueberries, strawberries and blackcurrants. There are some chocolate chips added in, which makes this taste like you’re eating dessert first thing in the morning. It’s amazing.

holos organic overnight muesli berries

A close second for me would be the basic vanilla. It has a warm flavor that’s perfect for adding in other ingredients. I sometimes top mine with chopped nuts, diced apples or a drizzle of peanut butter.

How Is the Texture?

I love the texture of this product. I focus a lot on the texture of the food that I eat, in addition to how it tastes. If you follow the directions and prepare it correctly, HOLOS Overnight Muesli is very creamy. In fact, it’s a lot creamier than many of the other products I’ve tried that are similar. There are no hard or chewy bits that compromise the quality.

Did It Help Me Reach My Protein Goals?

I make it a point to consume protein with each of my meals. This is so great for energy, exercise, regulating hormones and supporting optimal mental health. It gets difficult for me to come up with ways to incorporate protein into what I eat. I usually prefer whole foods and don’t love eating a lot of meat. This limits my intake and options. I acquired a few packages of HOLOS Overnight Museli and was impressed with what they contain. Not only are there 20 grams of protein in each serving, but there are also tons of great vitamins and minerals.

I usually eat my HOLOS first thing in the morning. There’s more protein in a single serving than if I took the time to make myself eggs. If I feel like I’m a little low on my protein intake on any given day, I’ll eat some as an afternoon snack.

Did I Experience Any Negative Side Effects?

My gut required a little bit of time to adjust to HOLOS. It didn’t take more than a week or so, and the symptoms weren’t extreme at all. I observed a little bit of bloating and gas. By the second week, there wasn’t anything negative that I could recall.

Would I Purchase HOLOS Overnight Muesli Again?

I still purchase HOLOS Overnight Muesli now and again. There are some different ways to save (referral program, subscription and gifts), so I’ll take advantage when I can.

What Is HOLOS Overnight Oats?

COCOA overnight oats by HOLOS

HOLOS Overnight Oats is a product brand that prides itself on using whole and healthy ingredients. Containing 20 grams of plant-based protein in each serving, along with 13 vitamins and minerals, fiber and 1 billion CFUs of probiotics, HOLOS is the best breakfast you’ll ever eat. It’s USDA-certified organic and made without any unhealthy additives or preservatives. You’ll know exactly what you’re putting into your body when you eat HOLOS Overnight Oats.

What Are the Ingredients in Holos Overnight Oats?

HOLOS contains organic, whole-food ingredients, such as oats, chia seeds, brown rice protein, fruits, sunflower seeds, mulberries, goji berries, sesame, pistachios, almonds, apples and much more. The ingredients vary based on the flavor that you choose.

What Are the Macros in HOLOS Overnight Oats?

There are 20 grams of protein in each serving of HOLOS, regardless of the flavor. Carbohydrates, fats and calories will vary. For example, the Apple and Cinnamon variety contains 49 grams of carbs, 11 grams of fat and 380 calories.

Are HOLOS Overnight Oats Healthy?

This is an incredibly healthy product. I could go on and on about the nutritional benefits of HOLOS. The immense amount of protein in each serving, the vitamins, and the fact that every flavor contains whole foods and nothing artificial-what is there not to love?

Increasing your protein can support a healthy metabolism, help you burn more calories and provide you with energy. I used HOLOS as a meal as well as a healthy snack, and both options are ideal.

How Long Can HOLOS Overnight Muesli Stay in the Fridge?

You have to leave HOLOS in the refrigerator for at least six hours before you try to eat it. However, you can keep it cool in there for as long as two days. Some people eat the whole pouch as one serving, but you can also split it.

Where Can You Buy HOLOS Overnight Oats?

You can purchase HOLOS Overnight Oats by visiting the HOLOS website at https://us.liveholos.com/. The cost is approximately $4.42 per meal, but can run a little higher depending on what you’re buying.

You can save 15% on your first subscription box.

What Are The Pros of HOLOS?

 • Each serving comes in its own single-serving pouch.

 • The protein content in each serving is hard to beat.

 • I love the creamy texture.

 • There are enough flavors available that I didn’t get sick of HOLOS.

 • It’s packed with nutrients.

What Are The Cons of HOLOS?

 • I’d love to see the HOLOS brand develop more flavors in the future.

 • There are a lot of probiotics in each serving. You might have a little trouble adjusting if you have a sensitive gut.

Oats Overnight vs. HOLOS Overnight Oats

You’ve probably come across Oats Overnight in your local grocery store or retail store like Target. I’ve picked up this product many times. It’s also a great option, containing 20 grams of protein in each serving as well. There are over 20 flavors available.

Overnight Oats are more of a drinkable option. It’s nice if you’re taking your oats on-the-go. They also have caffeinated options, limited seasonal flavors and vegan options.

The only thing I don’t love about Oats Overnight is that they use non-organic natural flavoring. Their protein comes from whey, which tends to upset some people’s guts.

Final Thoughts

I love to stock my pantry full of easy foods that pack a punch when it comes to nutrition, protein content, etc. HOLOS Overnight Oats is a staple that I’ll likely keep on hand for a long time to come. When my fresh ingredients start to diminish and I don’t feel like heading to the grocery store, it’s convenient to grab a pack of HOLOS Overnight Muesli to start my day with or to have as a snack later in the day. Making it takes just minutes. I highly recommend that you order a few packets of HOLOS to try if you’re looking for something healthy to add to your diet that is nutritious, delicious, high in fiber and benefits your gut health.

Think again. Here are 5 reasons why carbs aren't, which could change your perspective of them.

Feeling fearful of carbohydrates -aka carbs- lately? You aren't the only one. Diet culture has been vilifying carbs for decades by associating them with weight gain and diabetes. Trendy low-carb diets like the keto diet claim to melt away body fat, improve energy efficiency, and regulate blood sugar. But do carbs really deserve the cold shoulder? And are ultra-restrictive low-carb diets all they’re hyped up to be? It’s time to set the record straight once and for all.

Carbs: What Are They?

First, what are carbs? Carbs are one of three macronutrients, the other two being protein and fat. When consumed, digestible carbs are broken down into glucose (sugar). This sugar enters the bloodstream, where insulin allows it into cells to be stored or used as energy.

Insulin is a hormone released by the body when carbs are ingested. Think of insulin as a key that unlocks cells in the bloodstream to allow blood sugar to enter. When the body isn’t releasing insulin or insulin isn’t working correctly, blood sugar remains elevated because it cannot be taken in by the cells. The types of carbs consumed through diet can impact how well the body utilizes insulin to control blood sugar.

Carbs are commonly associated with bread and pasta, but it’s important to remember that they’re also in other nutrient-dense plant-based foods like beans, fruits, and vegetables. With that in mind, not all carbs are created equal. Some carbs contain single, double, or multiple sugar molecules and can be classified as “simple” or “complex”.

Simple Carbs

Simple carbs contain single and double sugar molecules that can be quickly and easily broken down to be utilized by the body as energy. Because they are rapidly digested, eating simple carbs can cause a spike in blood sugar levels. Over time, this can result in negative health outcomes. Simple carbs come in the form of added sugar in sodas, pastries, and candy, but also occur naturally in fruit, vegetables, and milk.

This doesn’t mean we need to avoid fruits and vegetables! These foods are rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals that inhibit rapid increases in blood sugar. They end up acting more like complex carbs in terms of blood sugar control.

Complex Carbs

Complex carbs contain three or more sugar molecules and are much more difficult for the body to break down. For this reason, they’re digested slowly and cause a gradual and steady increase in blood sugar. Complex carbs tend to be rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Sources include whole grains, beans, and starchy vegetables like potatoes.

Five Reasons Carbs Are Not The Enemy!

It’s recommended that 45-65% of your daily caloric intake comes from carbs. To put this into perspective, a person following a 2,000-calorie diet would consume 900-1,300 calories from carbs alone. Break this down further, and you’re looking at 225-325 grams of carbs per day. Before you let those numbers frighten you, let’s explore 5 reasons carbs are not the enemy.

#1. Carbs are the Body's Preferred Source of Energy

We’ve already established that carbs are broken down into sugar and used by the body as energy. A diet that includes all three macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein, and fat) will always utilize carbs first for energy. Carbs provide energy for the brain, heart, muscles, and central nervous system to function optimally. Energy from carbs can be used for immediate tasks or converted into glycogen and stored in the muscles for later use.

During exercise, carbs provide quick bursts of energy for explosive movements and muscle contractions. Endurance exercise may tap into fat stores when long-lasting energy is needed. Lastly, protein can be broken down to provide energy when other sources aren’t available, but this isn’t ideal.

The brain uses energy from carbs to produce serotonin, which plays a role in mood, sleep, and cognition. Without carbs, you may feel grouchy and have focus and memory problems.

So, if carbs are the body's preferred source of energy, then why is the Keto diet so mainstream? The goal of very low-carb or “no-carb” diets like the Keto diet is for the body to achieve a state of ketosis. Ketosis occurs when your body uses fat for energy instead of carbs. However, these diets are extremely restrictive and difficult for most to maintain. For any diet to be truly effective, it needs to be sustainable.

Next time you’re feeling sluggish or having difficulty focusing, be sure you’re eating an adequate amount of carbs to keep your body and mind fueled. Oats, chickpeas, quinoa, and sweet potatoes are excellent sources of complex carbs that provide the body with efficient fuel.

#2. Carbs Aid in Digestion

Not all carbs are broken down into sugar to be used for energy. Fiber is a nondigestible type of carb that benefits the body in many ways. There are two kinds of fiber, insoluble and soluble. Both work together to relieve constipation and stimulate regular bowel movements.

 • Insoluble fiber promotes digestive health by bulking up stool. Because it’s not broken down, insoluble fiber moves through the bowels collecting waste as it goes. Here's a list of insoluble fiber foods to consider.
 • Soluble fiber absorbs water and forms a gel-like consistency. This helps waste pass smoothly through the bowels. Soluble fiber also keeps you feeling fuller longer, which supports weight management.

It's recommended to eat about 25-35 grams of fiber per day. Increase your fiber intake gradually, and drink plenty of water to avoid uncomfortable side effects like bloating and cramping. Carbs rich in fiber include lentils, peas, oat bran, wheat bran, flaxseeds, chia seeds, kale, pears, and apples.

Here are some simple ways to increase your fiber intake to support healthy digestion:

 • Leave the skin on fruits and vegetables (pears, apples, potatoes)
 • Add berries, seeds, nuts, and beans to salads
 • Replace white bread, pasta, and rice with whole grain bread, whole wheat pasta, and brown rice
 • Add seeds and berries to oats or whole grain cereals
 • Add beans, quinoa, and brown or wild rice to soups and stews

#3. Carbs Help to Manage Blood Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance made by the liver. The liver makes all the cholesterol needed by the body, which is why it’s recommended to limit the amount of cholesterol ingested through the diet. There are two types of cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol). When LDL cholesterol is high plaque can build up in the arteries and lead to health complications like stroke or heart attack.

Usually, when it comes to lowering blood cholesterol, the focus is on reducing intakes of foods high in saturated fats. It’s not as well known that eating complex carbs helps lower cholesterol in the blood. More specifically, complex carbs rich in fiber benefit heart health by lowering LDL cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol.

When it comes to carbs and managing blood cholesterol, it’s all about the quality of carbs being consumed. Choosing high-fiber foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans results in better outcomes for cholesterol levels. The fiber in these foods reduces cholesterol by trapping it as it moves through the intestines and excreting it from the body through stool. This keeps the cholesterol from being absorbed into the bloodstream resulting in elevated blood cholesterol levels.

It's important to note that not all carb-rich foods reduce cholesterol. Foods like doughnuts and cookies tend to be higher in saturated fat. Eating too many foods high in saturated fat is a risk factor for high blood cholesterol and heart disease.

#4. Carbs Help Control Blood Sugar

Carbs have a bad reputation when it comes to blood sugar control. Many people wanting to manage their blood sugar have diabetes or are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, it’s a common myth that one must cut out carbs to reduce blood sugar or treat diabetes. But cutting out carbs isn’t the answer. What’s more important when it comes to controlling blood sugar is the types of carb foods being consumed.

Sure, foods with high amounts of added sugar like soda, juice, packaged cookies, and pastries, will cause your blood sugar to rise rapidly. When these foods are eaten regularly it becomes more difficult for the body to respond appropriately to maintain healthy blood sugar. Over time, a diet high in added sugar can increase the risks of developing diabetes.

On the other hand, complex carbs rich in fiber support healthy blood sugar levels. Fiber slows digestion, which results in a slow and steady increase in blood sugar rather than a quick spike. Choosing carb foods packed with fiber can lead to improved blood sugar control over time. Carb sources that control blood sugar include beans, oats, whole-grain bread, quinoa, berries, broccoli, and green beans.

#5. Carbs Aid in Weight Management

Carbs are commonly associated with weight gain, causing many people to turn to restrictive low-carb diets. You likely know someone who rants and raves about the weight they’ve lost following a low-carb diet. It’s common to lose weight quickly when starting this type of diet. Inevitably, drastically reducing carbs in your diet will result in lower caloric intake. Weight loss experienced during this time has more to do with cutting calories than reducing carbs specifically. However, most people can’t sustain such a restrictive eating pattern and will likely gain the weight back within the next few years. If a diet must continuously be restarted, is it really working?

Of course, a diet heavy in carb rich foods like cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, and chips may result in weight gain. These low-fiber foods are usually high in added sugar and saturated fat. Too much added sugar over time may contribute to insulin resistance, which is linked to weight gain. Insulin resistance is when the body no longer utilizes insulin effectively to let blood sugar into cells. Blood sugar remains elevated in the blood for longer. Additionally, fat is very calorically dense, containing 9 calories per gram. Carbs are much less calorically dense at only 4 calories per gram. Regularly eating high-fat foods with added sugar is associated with insulin resistance and weight gain.

So how can eating carbs aid in weight management? Nutrient-dense carb foods are packed with fiber that helps keep you feeling fuller for longer- think quinoa, oats, apples, pears, and sweet potatoes. Since fiber can’t be digested, it moves more slowly through the stomach. This may aid in portion control and results in consuming fewer calories throughout the day.

Additionally, quality sources of carbs cause slow, gradual increases in blood sugar rather than quick increases. Insulin can respond efficiently and effectively to allow blood sugar to enter the cells to be used for energy. This helps to manage blood sugar levels and reduces the risk of developing insulin resistance. Effectively managing blood sugar plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy weight.

The Takeaway

Carbs are a key element of a complete diet. They are not the enemy and should not be avoided for many reasons. However, to gain the benefits carbs have to offer, it’s important to choose quality carb foods packed with fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Complex carbs are usually full of nutrients and are digested slowly, while simple carbs tend to have more added sugar and are digested quickly. Carbs provide the body with energy that fuels the muscles and brain. Fiber-rich carb sources like oats, whole grain bread, fruits and vegetables with the skin, and beans aid digestion by relieving constipation and promoting regular bowel movements. These quality carb choices also lower LDL cholesterol and improve HDL cholesterol, which supports heart health.

Although carbs are typically known for contributing to high uncontrolled blood sugar, choosing complex carbs results in slow, steady increases in blood sugar that allow for improved control over time and reduced risk of developing insulin resistance. The fiber found in whole grain cereals, lentils, chickpeas, and chia seeds makes you feel fuller for longer, which may support maintaining a healthy weight.

Next time you think about ditching carbs, consider choosing quality, nutrient-dense carbs that offer numerous benefits to the body. You may just find that carbs are your friend and not your enemy.

I’ve personally tried both of them (in addition to other greens powders) and have found them to be beneficial for my overall health. I want to talk to you about both of these brands and products in regard to their taste, effectiveness, formulation and benefits.

This product is great if you’re concerned that you have nutritional gaps in your diet and want to make sure that your body has exactly what it needs to thrive.

I personally found that Primal Greens from Primal Harvest has a very nice flavor compared to some of the other greens products out there. All too often I find a product that is packed full of beneficial ingredients, but it’s a chore to try to consume it on a regular basis because the manufacturer doesn’t put enough attention on how their product tastes. Primal Greens doesn’t really produce any kind of unwanted side effects when you first start taking it, and you may start to notice benefits almost immediately. However, Primal Harvest recommends that you use their product for at least three months to really experience how life changing it is. I have used it on and off for many months at a time and experienced a great deal of digestive and health benefits over a long-term period of time.

About Organifi

Organifi greens on a kitchen counter.

Green juice is beneficial any time of the day, but Organifi recommends using their product first thing in the morning. This is when the hormone cortisol is at its highest. Over the course of the day, cortisol levels will lower. However, there are a lot of people that are dealing with high cortisol levels over a longer period of time because of an unhealthy diet / lifestyle, health issues, toxins, high sugar consumption, unbalanced hormones, etc. Your body resets with the use of Organifi, thanks to the adaptogens that are included in its formulation. Ingredients like ashwagandha help your body handle stress much better. The other superfoods included in this product are also beneficial. With prolonged use, Organifi will lower your cortisol levels and normalize things like your metabolism and energy, so you don’t turn to unhealthy forms of energy in the middle of the afternoon.

How It Works

Organifi works by resetting your body each morning by way of 11 different detoxifying superfoods. It has one of the best flavors around, and I’ve tried a lot of greens powders before. While it might seem like this product has fewer nutritional components than something like Primal Greens, it has the right micronutrients to help balance your cortisol and stress levels, it helps you manage your weight more effectively and it can even detox your body of harmful toxins that have built up over time.

The Formula

Key ingredients to organifi green juice

Organifi comes in two different flavors: apple and mint. Containing 11 different superfoods, this product benefits from a rush of micronutrients first thing in the morning when you wake up. Some of the key ingredients included in Organifi’s formulation include moringa, ashwagandha, matcha green tea, chlorella, spirulina, turmeric, red beet extract, wheatgrass, lemon and coconut water. Not only do these ingredients provide you with essential nutrients, but they can help the body by way of better hydration, a better digestive process and decreased inflammation.

Ashwagandha

This is an adaptogen that has very potent stress relieving properties. It can help you lose weight, increase your muscle strength, sharpen focus and memory while also supporting a healthy cardiovascular system.

Coconut Water

Excellent for hydration, coconut water naturally contains beneficial electrolytes. It can also prevent kidney stones, support heart health, boost antioxidant levels in the body and balance your blood sugar levels naturally.

Spirulina

Spirulina is very rich in a number of nutrients such as the B complex vitamins, iron, zinc, copper and vitamin E. It can lower cholesterol and decrease inflammation in the body.

Pros

 • Certified USDA organic
 • Contains 11 different superfoods
 • Has a pleasant taste
 • Mixes well
 • Provides your body with a reset
 • Offers stress support

Cons

 • Also contains proprietary blends, so you can’t see what’s in each serving
 • It’s one of the more expensive greens powders

Comparing Formulas and Effectiveness

The main difference between Primal Greens and Organifi Green Juice is the number of ingredients that are included in each of the formulas. Primal Greens from Primal Harvest has more than 50 different fruits and vegetables in it. You’ll only find 11 ingredients inside of Organifi. This isn’t to say that the formula used to make Organifi isn’t beneficial to the body. However, you tend to get more benefits with the more nutrients and components that you’re ingesting daily. While we don’t know the exact amount of each ingredient in Primal Greens, we know that it encompasses a lot of important factors.

I personally found that Primal Greens had more of a positive effect on my body than Organifi Green Juice did. However, as a wellness expert I might be a little more hyper-aware of how I feel when I’m taking a specific supplement. I have used both products first thing in the morning as a way to jumpstart my day with some added nutrients and digestive support. I had a lot of energy throughout the course of the day when I was using Primal Greens. Organifi seemed to last a little less, but I did feel more focused and calmer during the day. My GI system was a lot more regulated with the use of both products (individually).

Comparing How They Taste

Primal harvest greens being held up by multiple hands

When comparing the overall taste of these two products, I would have to say that I preferred Organifi Green Juice when I was going to be drinking my powder on its own. It comes in two delicious flavors (I’ve tried both). The Original Mint is very refreshing, and I liked the mint because of how soothing it is for the gut. I have tried the Crisp Apple flavor as well and found it to be pleasant and not overly sweet. Primal Greens doesn’t necessarily taste bad, but it definitely is far more palatable when you’re going to mix it with other ingredients. I frequently used it inside of my morning smoothie, which has a lot of other strong-tasting fruits and vegetables.

Comparing Overall Value and Pricing

The current cost of Primal Greens powder is $49.95 for a one-time purchase. If you subscribe to receive one bag of product each month, this drops the cost down to $39.96 per bag. You can save even more by ordering more bags at once. Your subscription includes free shipping, which isn’t available if you’re only buying one bag at a time.

The cost of Organifi Green Juice is currently set at $69.95, which is a discounted price from the original $79.45. You also have the option to subscribe and save with Organifi. The cost of one canister drops down to $62.96 per container. You can pause or skip your deliveries whenever you want. If you prepay for three shipments, this secures free shipping and another discount.

Considering the price points, you get a lot more nutrients and ingredients when you purchase Primal Greens. Also, this is the more affordable product. However, Organifi offers more options for saving money based on the amount of product that you want to purchase.

Comparing Testing Procedure of Product

Primal Harvest products are made in the USA in their very own GMP-certified facility. They always use third-party testing to ensure that their products are of the highest quality possible.

Organifi also has a very strict and rigorous third-party testing process that is used to ensure that their products are not only safe, but also free of dangerous chemicals and heavy metals.

Main Differences between Organifi and Primal Greens

Green apples under organifi green juice and spinach under primal greens

The main difference between Organifi and Primal Greens is the ingredients that are used. In Organifi Green Juice, the main fruits and vegetables included are chlorella, spirulina, turmeric, lemon, wheatgrass and red beet. Many of these ingredients are also included in the formulation of Primal Greens, but there is a slew of other ingredients as well, such as carrot, alfalfa, wheatgrass, pineapple, raspberry, cranberry, turmeric root, ginseng, ashwagandha and much more. Primal Greens also includes a probiotic blend, which isn’t found in Organifi. Organifi can affect the gut, but its ingredients benefit the body in a different way than Primal Greens does.

Which Is Better: Primal Greens or Organifi?

Primal greens powder in a spoon

When it comes to looking for a well-rounded greens product that will provide you with a variety of health benefits, I would have to recommend Primal Greens over Organifi. While my journey as a wellness enthusiast has led me to trying both of these products (as well as other greens products), I like the amount of ingredients that you get in a single serving of Primal Greens. I’d love to know more about how much of each ingredient is included in a dose, but I trust that Primal Harvest has put a great deal of research and development into their popular greens powder. They have a number of health and wellness products that have been very well received.

The Bottom Line

Greens powders such as Primal Greens from Primal Harvest and Organifi Green Juice provide you with easy access to all kinds of beneficial nutrients. These specific brands that I’ve talked about in this article has chosen their ingredients very specifically to help you achieve overall health and wellness, as well as balancing your hormones, improving GI health, improving your quality of sleep, boosting your mood and providing you with natural energy all day long. After learning more about what each of them provides, which product are you interested in trying?

The Benefits of Vitamin B12 for Men: What Can It Do? https://dtcwellnesshub.com/vitamin-b12-benefits-for-men/ https://dtcwellnesshub.com/vitamin-b12-benefits-for-men/#respond Wed, 21 Dec 2022 10:40:28 +0000 https://dtcwellnesshub.com/?p=13568 As a man, I often wonder what type of benefits you can get from each vitamin. I continue that quest by researching what the benefits of vitamin B12 for men actually are.

The post The Benefits of Vitamin B12 for Men: What Can It Do? appeared first on DTC Wellness Hub.

]]>
What We'll Cover

Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, plays a very important role in the formation of red blood cells, cell metabolism, the function of different nerves in the body and DNA production. While we can source our vitamin B12 from many of the foods that we eat each day (different types of poultry, meat, fish, fortified cereals and dairy products), a lot of people (especially men) have to supplement to meet their daily requirements. As a man gets older, their ability to absorb B12 decreases.

An actual B12 deficiency isn’t very common, but a lot of men (and women) benefit from supplementing to increase their intake. This is a water-soluble vitamin, so the body gets rid of whatever it doesn’t need through our urine output. If low levels of vitamin B12 aren’t addressed, this can lead to issues such as anemia, muscle weakness, low energy, low mood and even nerve damage.

What Can Vitamin B12 Do for Men?

Smiling men in a line together

Men that supplement with vitamin B12 can boost their body’s ability to perform some very important functions like the production of red blood cells, production of DNA and nerve signals / production. Dealing with a B12 deficiency over the course of many years can lead to some pretty serious health issues that affect your neurological ability and result in the development of diseases.

B12 doesn’t really cause any kind of side effects, so it’s beneficial for men to get their daily dose through both food and supplementation. Many of our readers often ask me if men should take a multivitamin. I can tell you this – I myself take a B12 supplement routinely, either on its own or from a multivitamin.

Vitamin B12 Benefits a Man Can Expect

This essential vitamin that protects and nourishes your nerves, blood, and DNA must come from either food or supplements. It’s not something that our body produces on its own. If you’re getting enough B12 each day, you can expect some pretty impressive benefits.

Increases Energy Production

When you’re deficient in vitamin B12, this can lead to fatigue and weakness in different areas of the body. This is caused by a lack of red blood cells and oxygen in the body. B12 can effectively improve the energy you have throughout the day, increase your physical performance levels and increase endurance.

Helps Brain Function

Increasing your B12 consumption can reduce your risk of memory loss, seizures, cognitive impairment and much more. There are a number of studies that have concluded patients with Alzheimer’s disease have high levels of homocysteine in their body that could be caused by nerve cell loss. You can protect your cells with B12 supplementation as well as lower your homocysteine levels.

Helps Keep Blood and Nerve Cells Healthy

Vitamin B12 is used by the body to form new red blood cells as well as facilitate the production of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein that is used by the body to carry oxygen in your blood. If you don’t have enough B12, your bone marrow isn’t able to produce adequate amounts of red blood cells. Their formation is proper either, as red blood cells will end up being the wrong size and shape. They could even die off quicker than they normally should. Over time, this can lead to a condition called megaloblastic anemia.

Prevents Megaloblastic Anemia

Megaloblastic anemia refers to a person having very large red blood cells. There will also be a decreased amount of these cells in the body. Megaloblastic anemia occurs when you are deficient in vitamins B12 and B9. This prevents healthy development of your red blood cells and bone marrow function. Not enough oxygen will be carried through the body.

Helps Build Muscle

Heavy barbell with weights held by a man in the squat position

The production of red blood cells is important in regard to oxygen being delivered to your muscles. When oxygen supply is adequate, more muscle can be built on the body during physical activity.

Improves Skin Health and Hair Health

Our bodies require vitamin B12 for cell reproduction, which affects us not only internally but on the exterior of our body as well. This vitamin is actually included in a number of cosmetic and beauty products that are applied topically. B12 can reduce inflammation on the skin, cure dryness and heal acne. It can also help keep your hair healthy and strong.

Improves More Restful Sleep

If you struggle with getting good quality sleep at night, you’ll be happy to know that B12 can have an effect on a man’s pineal gland. This gland is responsible for producing melatonin, which is a natural hormone that helps us fall asleep at night and stay asleep for longer periods of time.

Enhances a Man’s Mood

A large percentage of men who are struggling with depression also have low levels of vitamin B12 in their body. While we don’t quite know how B12 deficiencies can eventually lead to depression, it’s likely that there is a link between B12 and the different chemical processes that occur in the brain. Some men have actually found they experienced an improvement in their depressive symptoms when taking a B12 supplement.

Bone Health

Vitamin B12 can regulate our homocysteine levels. When our levels are too high, this can lead to the breakdown of bone because of lower blood flow in these areas. The body also experienced slower bone building which eventually leads to an increased risk of fractures and the development of osteoporosis as a man ages.

What Are Symptoms of Low Vitamin B12 in Men?

I’ve talked a bit about the various issues that you may experience if you’re a man that is deficient in vitamin B12, but there are some specific signs you should watch out for if you suspect that you’re dealing with a deficiency. Supplementing early on can ensure that you don’t develop severe health complications.

Some men that have low levels of vitamin B12 in the body may experience:

 • A pale or yellow complexion
 • Low levels of energy
 • Tiring easily
 • Shortness of breath
 • Rapid heart rate
 • Loss of balance
 • Pins and needles in your extremities
 • Numbness in your arms and legs
 • Impaired reflexes

How Much Vitamin B12 Can a Man Take Per Day?

Your doctor can diagnose low levels of B12 in the body with a simple blood test. If you have been advised to start taking a B12 supplement, it’s recommended that adult males should consume 2.4 micrograms of B12 each day. If you’re over the age of 50, the recommended dietary allowance can increase to 100 to 400 micrograms. The male body absorbs less B12 as it ages, so your dose may increase as well to compensate.

The Relationship between Aging and Vitamin B12 Levels

Smiling bearded man in agray jacket

As with many different processes in the body, it becomes harder to absorb vitamin B12 as we age. This is caused by a shift in the stomach acids that we have in our gut, as well as the stomach enzymes that are needed in order to properly process B12. If you’re dealing with a diagnosed digestive issue, you may want to talk to your doctor about the need for supplementing with B12 regularly.

Vitamin Supplements with B12 Support

Now it’s time to take a look at some of the best vitamin supplements that contain B12 support in them. I’ve tried a number of them myself, and I’ve been careful to choose items from only reputable and trusted brands. These products provide a number of benefits, which I’ll cover below.

For a more personalized approach to supplementation, Autumn DNA offers DNA testing that can help determine what nutrients you should be supplementing with. Your lifestyle, gender and age are also taken into consideration when a recommendation is made. Instead of taking the wrong nutrients and bombarding your body with things that it doesn’t need, Autumn DNA considers the specific set of needs that a person has based on their lifestyle choices and genetics. High-quality formulas have been developed by an expert medical team inside of an award-winning lab. Once your testing is complete, you’re provided with a report that has actionable insights designed to keep you healthy and maximize your overall health.

Diet: Foods That Are High in Vitamin B12

In addition to high quality supplements, you have the option of increasing your vitamin B12 intake from the foods that you include in your daily diet. Some of the foods that contain high levels of B12 include:

Animal meat options like liver contain high levels of vitamin B12. Just one serving can help you achieve more than 7,000 percent of your daily B12 requirement. Lamb is an excellent source of B12, and it also contains nutrients such as copper, selenium and vitamins A and B2. They’re also very high in antioxidants.

Beef is a great source of vitamin B12. Steak and ground beef can provide you with well over your 100 percent daily recommended value of B12. Just make sure that you’re getting your nutrients from lean cuts of beef, and always cook it at a lower heat to preserve its B12 content.

Fortified cereals, bread and dairy products may contain added vitamin B12, as well as the other B complex vitamins. If you’re opting for a fortified cereal, make sure that you’re careful with its sugar composition. A lot of cereals contain crazy amounts of sugar, making them really unhealthy. As a rule of thumb, I usually opt for a cereal that contains less than 10 grams of sugar in each serving. Also, it should be made from whole grains.

Salmon has a very high B12 content as well as omega-3 fatty acids. Just one half of a filet of salmon can provide you with your daily recommended dose of B12. It’s also an excellent source of B vitamins.

The Bottom Line

Most men are getting a sufficient amount of vitamin B12 from the balanced diet that they are eating. However, older adults and people who are following a specialty diet may have low levels that are impacting their health. If you have been diagnosed with low levels of vitamin B12 or suspect that you have a deficiency, you can quickly increase your intake by consuming B12 supplements. Just make sure that you’re opting for a high-quality option that is sold from a reputable brand. It’s even better if you can find a supplement that sources its ingredients from whole food sources. This increases bioavailability and provides you with more beneficial nutrients on a daily basis.

What We'll Cover

Our bodies are largely made up of water, but that doesn’t mean that we have to replenish our fluids with plain, tasteless water all day. Sugary, high-caffeine sodas and energy drinks may not be your best option, but there are other healthier alternatives to take into consideration. I was always a big, iced tea drinker, but years ago I made the switch to healthy beverage options when I became more interested in health and wellness. I like something with flavor that’s good for me, so I came across Happy Being Tea not too long ago and instantly fell in love with it.

I don’t mind a little bit of caffeine in my beverages, but I’m not one to drink cup after cup of coffee or tea all day. Also, I’m opposed to consuming large amounts of refined sugar. It’s just not good for the body in so many ways. I've tried some of the more popular mushroom coffees, which I liked a lot, but I wanted to see what the tea with low caffeine was all about.

I love Happy Being Tea because it has a very low caffeine content, it has a mild flavor and there are zero grams of added sugar in it. There are a lot of health benefits that it provides as well.

Let’s look closely at Happy Being Tea together. I want to introduce you to this amazing product, explain what’s inside of it and how it can benefit your health. I’ll also give you some alternatives at the end of this article if you’re looking for variety or something completely different.

About Happy Being Teas

A glass being filled with Happy being tea

After analyzing the beverage industry, the creators of Happy Being Tea realized that there was something missing. They wanted to include a functional beverage that was also really good for your health. In addition to the high-quality teas that are used in their products, there are other beneficial ingredients included such as turmeric, vitamin D3, elderberry and pterostilbene, which is similar to resveratrol. It has powerful antioxidant properties. The ingredients inside each flavor are very bioavailable, so you get maximum benefits from just one serving.

Some of the flavors available through Happy Being Teas includes Blueberry, Cucumber Mint and Peach Rose. All of them are made using white tea as the base flavor. Other added ingredients include blueberries, strawberries, bananas and spinach for a nutritional boost. One bottle can accomplish so much, including improving your natural immune response, promoting optimal gut health and fighting inflammation in the body.

Pros

 • Low caffeine content
 • No added sugar
 • Mild flavor
 • Attractive packaging
 • Boosts your overall health and wellbeing
 • Boosts your immune system

Cons

 • Currently, you have to source Happy Being tea through the company’s website (there are just a few small markets in the company’s hometown area that sells it). I hope it will be available in some major retail stores eventually so it’s easier to get your hands on your favorite flavors.
 • It’s a bit expensive. A 24 pack of bottled tea costs over $136.

Peach Rose Tea Happy Being

Designed to support your immune system, decrease inflammation and improve your gut health, Healthy Peach Rose Tea is another variety from Happy Being Tea that’s a customer favorite. It has a very summer-like flavor, but it’s great year-round. I like it because it has plenty of flavor, but you don’t get that overly sweet, artificial taste that a lot of similar peach teas have. Plus, there are plenty of health benefits that come along with this product.

Ingredients

Natural peach juice along with white tea gives Healthy Peach Rose Tea an amazing flavor that’s very refreshing and simple. It’s not overly sweet, but it will invigorate your taste buds for sure. This product also includes the other base ingredients that Happy Being Tea varieties include, such as:

While Happy Being Tea isn’t marketed as a weight loss product by any means, there are a number of health benefits that it can provide which can in turn, help you lose weight. For example, these different teas can boost your overall gut health. So, in the long run, Happy Being Teas can absolutely be a nice complement to a healthy diet and exercise routine.

My Experience and Review of Heights Vitamins Smart Supplement

Heights vitamins in hands

I tried Heights Vitamins Smart Supplement when I first really started learning about nutritional deficiencies. I have tried a number of multivitamins and similarly related products over the years, but this is one that I can really stand behind.

What I Liked

I find that Heights puts a great deal of research and thought into the different ingredients that are used for their Smart Supplement. It’s not an overly long list of active ingredients that megadose you on all kinds of things that you don’t need. Rather, you’re gaining access to the different specific nutrients that benefit our bodies and brain, many of which are water soluble. You don’t have to worry about your body being overloaded with what isn’t needed.

This is a totally vegan supplement that was really gentle on my stomach. It’s common for my gut to have to adjust to something new that I’m taking, but I didn’t really experience anything out of the norm with this supplement. The omega 3 included is sourced from algae, which is much gentler than other commonly used sources.

What I Didn’t Like

I’m not a huge fan of a subscription service, but I know this is something convenient that a lot of people prefer. I like to purchase my products when I need them, to account for any missed doses and extra product that has built up. It’s not a huge deal though, and I appreciated the little bit of money that was saved by subscribing. I stuck with the monthly option to keep things simple.

What Could Be Improved

I would like it if Heights offered a one-time purchase option for this supplement. I think it would be nice to have more versatile buying options.

Also, this supplement can turn your urine very yellow when you’re taking it because of the riboflavin content of it. Maybe lowering the dose in the product would prevent this from occurring? It makes it hard to judge if you’re hydrated or not from the color of your urine.

Real Heights Vitamins Reviews and Customer Rating

There are almost 850 reviews listed on the Heights website. The product has a 4.7 star rating out of five stars. People have expressed being able to sleep better, think more clearly and remember things better within the first few weeks of use. It has even helped with anxiety and fatigue due to hormone changes in a number of customers.

How Long Until I Start Seeing Results?

Some of the more subtle effects that can occur with the use of the nutrients in this product will present themselves within just a week or two of starting Heights Smart Supplement. There are more benefits that you may experience, but Heights says that it can take up to 12 weeks to see this product’s full benefits. Don’t discount it right away if you don’t notice a change. There may be a lot going on internally that will take some time to show.

Alternatives Compared to Heights Vitamins

There are different multivitamins and supplements available for purchase from different brands which provide similar results to Heights Vitamins. Here are some of the ones that I’ve tried and that I’ve heard great things about from some of my health and wellness professional friends and enthusiasts.

mindbodygreen brain guard + (Most comparable)

brain guard + mindbodygreen

Mindbodygreen brain guard is very similar to Heights Vitamins Smart Supplement in regard to the nutrients that it provides and the benefits that you can achieve. It contains citicoline, kanna and resveratrol to support neurotransmitter production, improve brain processing speed and also to increase blood flow to your brain. This achieves mental sharpness and cognitive flexibility. It’s ideal for people with brain fog and low energy.

Kanna is a nootropic botanical that has been sustainably sourced from South Africa. It provides balance for key neurotransmitters, so you experience cognitive flexibility and mental wellbeing.

Resveratrol is fermentation derived and offers potent antioxidant protection against free radical damage and oxidative stress. It can also help create cellular resistance and mitochondrial health.

Primal Mind Fuel (Budget Friendly)

mind fuel primal harvest

For a more affordable option, Primal Mind Fuel offers a nootropic formula that increases your daily performance by way of 11 different ingredients. This product features the patented NeuroSmart for optimal cognitive wellness, Cogniplex for a healthy stress response and Rhodiola rosea for improved mood, productivity and motivation. Primal Harvest products are made in a GMP-certified facility and third-party testing is used for quality assurance. This product is also gluten-free, free of dairy and free of soy.

For a similar profile to Smart Supplement from Heights, this product features CogniPlex, which is a balanced blend of essential B-vitamins (B6, B12, and B1) to support brain health, energy levels and cellular health. Bacopa Monnieri and Huperzine A create a perfected flow state for focus and productivity.

Autumn DNA (Most sophisticated Personalized Vitamin Pack)

autumn dna multivitamins for men

Instead of wasting your time on supplements that contain ingredients that you don’t need, Autumn DNA provides you with a much more personalized approach to vitamin supplements. Your DNA is utilized along with a lifestyle assessment to determine what nutrients your body will benefit from the most. You can then purchase a supplement that meets all of these requirements. High-quality formulations have been developed by the expert medical team at Autumn DNA inside of an award-winning lab.

In addition to your supplement recommendations, you receive an easy-to-understand report with different insights about how your health impacts your life. It’s a little bit more of an expensive and sophisticated option, but sometimes the peace of mind is worth it. You can save some money if you can upload your DNA information from a third-party site like Ancestry or 23 and Me.

Conclusion

Not only do I think that it’s important to focus on getting all of your nutrients each day, but I love being able to source supplements from a brand that you can tell cares about their customers. Heights Vitamins puts a great deal of time and attention into the products that they’re selling. Their Smart Supplement is easy to order, gentle on the stomach, doesn’t contain super high doses of ingredients and can be used by so many people to boost brain health but to accomplish other things like increase your energy levels, help you sleep better at night, promote cardiovascular health, balance your nervous system and much more. They also have a really great customer service department if you run into any issues or have any questions before you order.

I like to take into account things like ingredients, value, packaging and brand reputability when I’m going to be making a purchase. Heights meets all of my personal requirements, which is why I feel confident in recommending this product to you. As a wellness enthusiast and someone who cares about their brain health extensively, I can’t wait to hear what you think about Heights Vitamins Smart Supplement.

Should You Try Heights Vitamins?

large box of heights vitamins

There’s no denying the importance that multivitamins and supplements have in your day-to-day life. With so many of us deficient in different nutrients because of a poor diet or just not enough time to make healthy meals, it’s imperative that we’re supplementing. I love the formulation that’s inside of Heights Vitamins Smart Supplement. It’s really so much more than just a brain health product. If you’re concerned that you’re not getting enough nutrients from the food that you’re eating (and you’re probably right about this suspicion), I would highly recommend Heights Vitamins as a place to start. There may be other ingredients that you would benefit from as well, but this is a versatile product to start out with that will likely cover most (if not all) of your bases.

What We'll Cover

Caffeine is something that has always had a bit of a negative effect on me. Sure, it’s great when I wake up tired and need to get to work early, but I am someone that experiences a major energy crash when it wears off. I’m also prone to side effects like palpitations, a racing heart and a jittery feeling. It’s just not worth it to me. If I do consume caffeine, I like it to be a minimal amount that’s just enough to boost my energy. The amount that’s in a traditional cup of coffee is too much.

As a wellness enthusiast, I’ve been lucky enough to come across a number of products that function as alternatives to the typical cup of morning coffee. I want to compare two of them in this article. Rasa and MUD WTR are two coffee alternatives that I’ll be outlining for you today.

Rasa is completely caffeine free and uses adaptogens to increase your energy and boost your health. MUD WTR does contain caffeine, but it’s much less than regular coffee. If you’re like me, I think you’re going to be excited to hear about these two products.

Overview of Rasa

French roast rasa coffee

Rasa makes coffee alternatives that provide you with energy from natural sources such as herbs. Their products are USDA certified organic, vegan friendly and do not contain any artificial ingredients. Rasa has consulted science and tradition to formulate some great coffee alternative blends. You’ll have more energy; you’ll be in a better mood and some people even experience an increase in their libido.

Your morning beverage choice should help you get ready for the day ahead, but it shouldn’t have a negative effect on your health. Rasa utilizes ingredients like burdock, dandelion, cinnamon, chicory, chaga and reishi, all of which have been used for centuries thanks to their potent health benefits.

If you’re not sure what type of Rasa brew you would like to start with, the company offers a sample pack that includes five of their best blends (Original, Cacao, Dirty, Bold and Calm). They even have a holiday blend called Peppermint Cacao. There’s definitely a good amount of variety from Rasa, including creamers.

Pros

 • Offers an immunity boost
 • Contains adaptogen ingredients
 • Improves your quality of sleep
 • Helps you cut back on caffeine
 • Increases your ability to cope with stress
 • There is a 100 percent money back guarantee if you’re not completely happy with your purchase
 • Contains organic ingredients

Cons

 • Rasa has a very unique taste that is unlike MUD WTR and other coffee alternatives. Some people just can’t tolerate it.
 • Other functional mushroom-based coffee alternatives contain higher amounts of functional mushrooms in them

Cost and Where to Buy

You can purchase Rasa on the brand’s website, which is located at https://wearerasa.com/. The cost of their coffee alternative varies depending on what blend you’re interested in. Their Magnificent Mushrooms blend (which does not contain any caffeine) is currently priced at $30 for a one-time purchase. Golden Chai (also without caffeine) is priced at $39.99. You have to subscribe to save a substantial amount of money. Regular deliveries drop your cost down about 20 percent, depending on the blend.

Overview of MUD WTR

coffee replacement mud wtr

One of the original coffee alternative brands, MUD WTR can be used as a coffee replacement product to help you reduce your caffeine intake and boost your health. It’s designed to make you feel alert and ready for the day without causing any kind of energy crash, palpitations or anxiety. It’s a great option for helping you cut back on coffee, but it still has that great coffee taste. Included is also a blend of functional mushrooms that naturally provides you with energy, focus, GI support and an immune boost.

Some of the key ingredients included in MUD WTR are:

Reishi Mushrooms

Reishi mushrooms can naturally offer support for your immune system. This functional mushroom has been used for centuries for optimal health, and it gives MUD WTR its earthy flavor.

Cordyceps Mushrooms

Cordyceps have also been used for centuries thanks to their medicinal purposes. They can increase your energy levels without the need for caffeine, and they’re very well tolerated.

Lion’s Mane

Lion’s Mane functional mushrooms are used in the formulation of MUD WTR thanks to their ability to promote clear thinking and focus.

Rooibos Tea Extract

MUD WTR uses rooibos tea as the basis of this product. This is where the small amount of caffeine comes from, but it also includes a high composition of flavonoids, which are natural compounds in a variety of foods and plants that function as antioxidants.

Pros

 • Offers a healthier option to boost your energy levels without the need for excessive amounts of caffeine
 • Contains functional mushrooms that can be beneficial for your immune system, digestive system, brain, cardiovascular system and much more
 • There is a MUD WTR nighttime product available that doesn’t include any caffeine. It uses adaptogens to help you relax and wind down
 • Utilizes organic ingredients
 • No artificial preservatives, colors or flavors

Cons

 • MUD WTR does not disclose how much of each functional mushroom is include in their product
 • This product does contain caffeine, though it’s about 1/7th the amount in a regular cup of coffee

Cost and Where to Buy

You can purchase MUD WTR through the brand’s website, which is located at https://mudwtr.com/. The current cost of a single container of Rise is about $50 for a one-time purchase and covers 30 servings. You can also purchase the Morning Ritual Starter Kit, which includes the Rise MUD WTR coffee and some other products like a frother. The Rest blend is also $50 for about 30 servings.

I’ve also been able to find MUD WTR in other locations online like Amazon, but it’s not always in stock.

Comparing Benefits

Rasa and Mud WTR

Both of these coffee alternative beverages offer a healthier source of lasting energy but without any jitters or crashes later on in the day. When comparing Rasa and MUD WTR, the main thing that stands out is their use of caffeine. Rasa blends generally contain about five milligrams of caffeine per serving. MUD WTR claims that their coffee alternative has 1/7th the amount of a traditional cup of coffee. If you do the math, MUD WTR contains more caffeine at about 13 milligrams per serving. If you’re worried that adaptogens and herbs aren’t going to wake you up and keep you energized, you might like the caffeine content of MUD WTR. It still helps you cut back, but you’re not completely giving up your preferred stimulant. It’s not as much as a traditional cup of coffee (around 90 milligrams per cup), so you shouldn’t be kept up at night from it. If you would like to try Rasa coffee but still want some caffeine, try out their Dirty blend. It provides 35 milligrams of caffeine per dose.

If you commonly use coffee to increase your focus, both MUD WTR and Rasa offer benefits in this regard. It’s a much more natural feeling of focus and energy that you get from these adaptogens and herbs. The focus comes on smoothly, and you won’t find that you’re left feeling drained later in the day. You also don’t get that anxious energy that caffeine so often results in.

Comparing Ingredients Used

MUD WTR and Rasa are both formulated using adaptogen ingredients. Instead of drinking a traditional cup of coffee and just getting a short-lived energy boost from the caffeine in that cup of coffee, you’ll actually help your body focus and feel more energetic by using functional mushrooms and other natural ingredients that are beneficial for your brain health.

The main difference between these two products is that most Rasa blends do not contain any caffeine. One of their blends contains a minimal amount of caffeine (five milligrams), and there is another option called the Dirty blend that contains 35 milligrams of caffeine. Rasa has more blends overall than MUD WTR, so you can better control the ingredients you’re consuming, the flavor and potential caffeine content.

Rasa has blends that include golden chai and cacao. They also incorporate ashwagandha into their products as well as rhodiola, which aren’t in MUD WTR.

Comparing Taste

mud wtr powder before it's mixed

MUD WTR has a very good reputation when it comes to its taste. It’s very creamy and smooth. You won’t be able to trick yourself into thinking it’s coffee, but it still has a very pleasant flavor that is similar enough to coffee that you won’t miss your old morning brew. It seems that when it comes to Rasa’s flavor, it’s either hit or miss. Some people find it to be quite tasty (especially some of the specialty blends like Cacao, which tastes like hot chocolate), while other people just can’t get used to it. It has a very earthy flavor that on its own can be tough to get accustomed to. Keep in mind, both of these products can still be used with your favorite creamer, and they both sell their own creamers.

Comparing Overall Value

In regard to value, you get what you pay for. While MUD WTR may be a bit more expensive, you’re getting higher quality ingredients and better flavor. Fifty dollars for a 30-day supply is reasonable if you consider that this is a product that’s much more than a quick cup of caffeine. It’s truly a product that’s almost like coffee and supplements in one. If you were to invest in coffee and the adaptogens separately that are in MUD WTR, you’d likely be spending even more. Rasa is quite a bit cheaper, but I feel like you’re getting less for your money. You have to utilize a French press with your Rasa coffee, which adds time to your morning routine. You’ll also have to invest in some additional equipment that you might not have.

Main Differences between MUD WTR and Rasa

Mud WTR simply being poured into a cup vs Rasa being prepared with boiling water

The main difference that stands out to me between MUD WTR and Rasa is the preparation. Rasa doesn’t provide you with a quick morning brew. You have to boil water, add your Rasa coffee to a French press and then let the product brew after you add the hot water. This can take a number of minutes if you want the flavor to really come out of Rasa’s ingredients. I do like using a French press on occasion, but the one I have is difficult to clean. I don’t want to use it daily. If you want to purchase MUD WTR and want to ensure you have a creamy and well blended cup of coffee alternative, you can buy one of their Ritual Starter Kits. They come with a frother, which is much easier and faster to use than a French Press.

Which is Better: MUD WTR or Rasa?

I’ve mentioned some of the differences between MUD WTR and Rasa, but I want to come back to the basics while I determine which is better. The ultimate goal of these products is to provide you with energy and focus. So, taking caffeine into account, I like that MUD WTR contains caffeine, but nowhere near what a traditional cup of coffee has. It’s a great way to cut back on your daily coffee consumption without completely giving up caffeine. Rasa does have some blends that contain caffeine, but the caffeine content is pretty low.

The Bottom Line of MUD WTR Vs Rasa

When you consume large amounts of caffeine on a daily basis, this can have a negative effect on your health. Coffee and caffeine can raise your blood pressure, increase your heart rate, make you feel anxious and interrupt your sleep cycle. Both MUD WTR and Rasa offer you with a healthier alternative to store bought coffee. These products and both healthy but can still increase your energy and focus so you can get through a long day of work without feeling fatigued. Many people utilize the different herbs and adaptogens that are in these coffee alternatives in supplements, and you can get the best of both worlds with a coffee alternative like MUD WTR or Rasa.
